Sinus - Lifting - surgery to build up the bone of the upper jaw.

Sinus - Lifting is a procedure for increasing the bone tissue of the upper jaw. The fact is that there is a sinus in the upper jaw (it is possible to say the air cavity). Due to a shortage of bone tissue, the implant may, so to speak, fall into the sinus and it will not be firmly fixed.синус ліфтінг перед імплантацією

Indications for the procedure of sinus - lifting.

There may be several reasons why the amount of bone tissue in the upper jaw of the patient is not sufficient to set the dental implant.

Probably a bone was damaged due to previous surgical procedures (e.g. heavy tooth extraction) or defects of periodentium (gums). Often a problem is encountered when the size and shape of the sinus are relatively large in comparison with the size of the upper jaw. Because of this, the thickness of the bone tissue is insufficient for implantation.

Preparation for the procedure of sinus - lifting.

The bone tissue that is used when the sinus is raised can be taken from your own body (autogenous bone) or cow bone (xenotransplant). If your own bone is to be used during a sinus lifting, it will be taken from other areas of your mouth or body (rarely).

In very extreme cases, the surgeon removes the bone from your thigh or leg (bone under the knee). You will need an X-ray taken before the sinus rises so that the dentist could study the anatomy of the jaw and sinuses. You may also need a special type of Computer Tomography (CT). This scan will allow the dentist to measure the height and width of your existing bone and evaluate the condition of your sinus accurately.

If you have a seasonal allergy, you should schedule a procedure when it is inactive.

How is the sinus lifting procedure performed (lifting of the sinus)?

The specific method that a dentist uses can vary. But traditionally this operation is performed as follows:

  1. With the help of an ultrasonic piezosurgical device and a special attachment in a place where the implant is subsequently installed, a small hole is made.
  2. An experienced surgeon-dentist raises the bottom of the laxative sinus, wiping off the mucous membrane.
  3. The bone crust is laid in the created window. Once the space under the mucous membrane is filled, you can close the window of the collagen membrane, then gum is fixed in the same place with a few stitches.

In some cases it is possible that the dentist will place the dental implant simultaneously with the surgery of the sinus lifting. But in most cases, the healing period lasts from six to nine months before the dentine implant is set.

Sinus - Lifting postoperative period - recommendations.

After performing such procedure you may have a swelling. Your mouth or nose can bleed. After the sinus lifting, you can whip up and often blow your nose. This may cause the movement of the bone graft and weaken the stitches. The dentist can prescribe a saline solution to keep your nasal mucus wet and prescribe medication to prevent stagnation and inflammation.

You will also be prescribed analgesics, antibiotics and antimicrobial mouthwash in order to prevent the development of infection. Most patients experience only a little discomfort after the sinus-lifting procedure.

7-10 days later you will have an appointment with your dentist again. The doctor will evaluate the location of the surgical manipulation and remove the stitches if they do not dissolve on their own. You may be asked to go back a few more times to the clinic to ensure that the postoperative site heals without complications. After the sinus lifting, you need to wait several months for the bone to solidify and connect to your jaw.

Depending on the used graft material used, the implants can be twisted within 4-9 months. In modern dentistry, experts began to use proteins, growth factors to help the new bone solidify faster.

The main risk of sinus-lifting is that the sinus membrane can be punctured or torn. If you can not restore it, then the surgeon - dentist stops the procedure and gives time for healing. It usually takes several months. The cured membrane tends to be more dense and strong, which means that the second attempt of a sinus-lifting will be successful.

However, other factors also influence success. Infections - they are a risk to any surgical procedure. After sinus-lifting it is a rarity. In very rare cases, the existing bone does not come alive with the material of the bone graft, and the grafted area does not develop blood supply. If this happens, any implants placed in this area will not get used to it. In this case, the procedure is repeated.

When to call the specialist after the operation.

Contact a dentist if:

  • Any tumor or pain worsens over time. (It should decrease after the first two days or so).
  • Bleeding does not stop within 1-2 days.
  • Bleeding is bright red and continuous. (Normal bleeding after this procedure slowly stops and becomes dark red with possible clumps).
  • You think that the bone material was knocked out after blowing your nose.
  • Pain does not diminish over time.
  • Your body t * has increased.

Patients should not be afraid that this procedure will have an adverse effect on their sinuses or will cause chronic sinus pain. Our experience in this procedure is large and long. Its use has been a common occurrence for many years in our clinic.
