Treatment of periostitis of any degree of severity. Gumboil - Causes and Symptoms.

Periostitis is a disease of the mouth cavity, better known as gumboil. The disease is an infectious and inflammatory process that develops rapidly, its cell may be located in the jawbone or in its body.лікування періоститу - флюс

This disease originates from odontogenic type. In simple language, the main cause of flux is a diseased tooth, which has not been treated for a long time. In most cases, the disease preceding the flux, is periodontitis. However, the infection can also fall into the body of the jaw, using blood as "transport".

Flux - what is this?

Flux is a process of inflammation of the alveolar arc, which is more commonly known as periosteum. In addition, the process of inflammation of the jaw is determined by the same term. If you take into account the statistics of dental clinics, you can find out that about five percent of patients have this disease, and more than 95% of people suffer from the acute form of it.

Approximately one of two fluxes develops in the lower jaw. The development of the disease is characterized by the possible reversibility of inflammation and high risks of manure deposits in the absence of necessary treatment. There are several subspecies of the disease, each of them has its own peculiarities and treatment.

Causes of flux (periostitis).

As already mentioned, in most cases, the disease has odontogenic origin and is a complication of the disease of the teeth. In approximately 70% of cases, the catalyst for the occurrence of flux is periodontitis, 18% - alveolitis, 4% - periodontitis or jaw cysts. In the latter two variants, the disease develops in a different way: the inflammatory exudate is transported from periodontal to the periostuem using bone canals in the body of the jaw.

For most people, the development of inflammation in the periosteum is directly associated with significant overcooling or overheating. In the course of a long study of this disease, it was discovered that approximately 75% of cases purulent periostitis has anaerobic microflora of mixed type and only in 25% - aerobic.

Symptoms of flux (periostitis).

The rate of development of the flux of the jaw largely depends on the form of the disease and the reaction of the organism and the human immune system. Acute form of periostism has mainly local signs: edema of soft tissues, hyperemia of the mucosa, etc. Often, an acute form of periosteum occurs due to such diseases of the teeth as pulpitis, periodontitis, etc.

Acute purulent form of the disease in most cases develops independently. That is, the disease may occur even when the teeth are completely healthy. The development of the disease is accompanied by the following symptoms: increased weakness and fatigue, severe headache, chills, etc.

Classification of periostitis

As already mentioned above, there are several forms of periostitis. Each of them shows itself in inflammation of the periosteum and soft tissues of the jaw. In total, four main types of the disease are distinguished:

  • acute periostitis of the serous type;
  • acute periostitis of the purulent type;
  • acute periostitis of the diffuse type;
  • chronic periostitis.

Acute serous periostitis.

This form of the disease develops very quickly, usually it occurs within one to three days. The main symptom of serous periosteum is a significant swelling of the soft tissues of the jaw. The localization of the flux is in the immediate proximity of the tooth, which is the cause of the disease. The size of edema depends on the shape of the blood vessels within the periosteum. The acute form may also begin to develop after hits, fractures, etc. Such a subtype is called traumatic or posttraumatic.

In most cases, periostitis of this kind expires itself within a small period of time (usually not more than three days), but sometimes it can cause severe inflammation and the development of another form of the disease - ossifying periostitis. It is characterized by the appearance of fibrosis type enlargements and deposits of calcium salts.

Acute periosteum of purulent type.

Acute purulent periostitis is often characterized by severe acute pain, which can sometimes be pulsating. It can spread to the hearing, vision, and also cause the  migraines. To get rid of it you can use cold compresses and analgesic drugs.

It is important: an edema can be heated in no case, as it only strengthens the pain.

In most cases, acute odontogenic periosteum is accompanied by a short-term increase in body temperature to 37.5 - 38 degrees. Besides, fatigue increases and weakness appears. It should be noted that the purulent periosteum in the lower jaw is much more complicated than the upper one.

The localization of the disease also depends directly on the location of the patient's tooth:

  • Cutters of the upper jaw - swelling occurs on the upper lip and can spread to the nose;
  • upper jaw and premolar fangs - the main focus of the disease is stenosis;
  • molars - swelling occurs in the upper parts of the cheeks;
  • premolars - flux appears in the lower part of the cheeks.

Chronic periostitis.

This form of flux is the most rarest. Almost always the location of the edema is the periosteum of the lower jaw. A distinctive feature of peristaltic chronic type is a local inflammatory reaction, which in the developmental stage does not change the facial features.

The main symptoms of chronic flux are swelling and reddening of the mouth cavity, thickening of the periosteum in the inflammation center and enlargement of the lymph nodes. This subspecies of the disease develops for a very long time, from 4 to 8 months, and sometimes may exceed one year.

Diagnostics of periostitis.

To determine the disease at its initial stages can only be reviewed at the dental clinics. Primary symptoms are hyperemia, infiltration, fluctuation, etc. During the development of the odontogenic type of flux, almost always in the mouth cavity there is a broken crown of the tooth, which is the causative agent of the disease.

Diagnostics is performed using X-ray. When the disease has an acute form, it is impossible to determine changes in the shape of the jaw with this method, but granulomatosis, or granulating periodontitis, is a direct catalyst for the appearance of periostitis.

Prediction and prevention of treatment.

When the first signs and symptoms of the disease appear, or when there are any suspicions, it is imperative that you contact the dentist immediately for help. You cannot help treating flux because it can lead to the development of serious illnesses.

It is important to understand that periostitis is a very dangerous infection, which can have serious consequences not only for teeth and mouth cavity, but for the entire human body. To protect yourself from it, you need to maintain mouth hygiene and undergo dental examinations on a regular basis.

Treatment of periostitis.

Treatment of odontogenic jaw inflammation involves the use of different techniques. The choice of a particular one depends on the type of disease, its degree of severity and individual characteristics of the human body. When the disease is in acute form, just complete the nerve removal procedure, thoroughly cleanse the wound and disinfect it with antiseptics and antibiotics.

In the development of purulent flux, the patient may need to undergo additional physioprocesses and significant anti-inflammatory therapy with antibiotics. Chronic flux in most cases is treated only by extraction of the patient's tooth.

Regardless of the type of disease (except for the chronic form), the first step in the treatment is the complex of antibiotics, selected in accordance with the individual characteristics of the patient. Usually, with proper treatment, the primary recovery comes within 3-5 days.

Patient, refusing or delaying treatment, is at risk, as flux can lead to severe illnesses, including gingival fistula, penetration of purulent deposits in the surrounding jaw tissue, which may result in the development of phlegmon.

Treatment of periostitis at home.

In the case that a flux suddenly formed, then only a highly skilled dentist can completely remove the edema. It is not only impossible but also dangerous to health to try to get rid of a swelling yourself without certain knowledge and skills. If you come across the disease  in an inappropriate period, and there is no opportunity to get to the dental clinics, then you can try to remove swelling on their own. However, it is important to understand that this is only a temporary solution to the situation, since it is simply not possible to cure a flux independently without an individually selected complex of drugs.

In order to relieve pain and swelling you can use the following methods:

  1. Tincture of calendula in alcohol - to mix one teaspoon of the remedy on a glass of water. The solution should be thoroughly rinsed into the mouth cavity.
  2. Mix green tea and sage, the solution is to rinse the mouth cavity.
  3. pour boiling water onto the leaves of mint or melissa, leave the solution for 3-4 hours. The liquid should be rinsed into the mouth cavity.

In any case, when there is acute periostitis it is necessary to make an appointment with a qualified specialist of dental clinics as soon as possible. In no case can the illness be allowed to flow, as it can affect not only the health of teeth and mouth cavity, but also the entire human body, up to a fatal outcome.

Cost of treatment.

One can not specifically name the cost of treatment of periostitis. The price depends on several factors, which include the type of disease, the individual characteristics of the patient, the severity of the disease, the price policy of dentistry, etc. Nobody can tell you the exact cost of treatment without exanimation of the patient. Only on the basis of the information received, you can find out the final price. One way or another, you should not do self-healing, because you can not save on health. Even if you somehow manage to remove swelling at home, you just cure the symptom. In this case, the chance of relapse is almost one hundred percent.
